Clashes in Gaza leave two dead

Israeli forces have clashed with militants in the Gaza strip killing at least two people – one of the victims was a 16-year old civilian. Three Israeli soldiers were lightly wounded when miitants fired an anti-tank missile at forces operating in the area. More than a dozen Israeli tanks have entered the town of Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza. The army says the operation aims at stopping Palestinian militants from firing rockets into Israel.

With the death toll seeming to mount endlessly – yesterday the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to condemn an Israeli attack in Gaza ten days ago that killed 19 civilians including women and children.

It also urged Israel to withdraw immediately from Gaza. The United States, Israel and Australia were among the seven nations to veto the resolution.

The UN is not alone in deploring the violence -Israeli peace activists have gathered on the border with Gaza to protest at their country’s offensive on the coastal strip.
