For us, it’s her. That’s the new slogan for the French Socialist party, boasting its decision to present a woman as its candidate for presidential elections next year. Segolene Royal won more than 60 percent of the vote among party members.
She said: “It’s the people who launched this. It’s the activists from the core who launched this movement and who today are giving this strength and giving me this momentum. And I want to tell them that they won’t be disappointed. Today we are going to create something extraordinary. That France is going to write a new page in its history, and it’s the French people who are writing this story.”
Royal beat former finance minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn, despite having much less ministerial experience.
In third place was former prime minister Laurent Fabius, who promoted himself as the defender of what his supporters desribed as France’s true left.
