Further Palestinian rocket strikes injure Israelis

Several people have been injured in further rocket strikes by Palestinian militants in the Israeli border town of Sderot. This only hours after Israel said Palestinian militants would pay what it calls a high price after a deadly rocket attack earlier. An Israeli woman was killed after two rockets were fired from the Gaza strip. One of the rockets is said to have landed not far from the home of Defence Minister Amir Peretz, who was not there at the time. The attack comes after Israeli shelling last week left at least 19 civilians dead in the Gaza town of Beit Hanoun.

Both the armed wing of the ruling Hamas movement and the Islamic Jihad militant group have claimed responsibility for the firing of the rockets. They have both released videos that cannot be independently verified. This as members of the international quartet on the Middle East meet in Cairo to review progress on talks for the formation of a unity government for the Palestinians.

The representatives from the US, the UN, the European Union and Russia are also looking at the possibilities for relaunching Middle East peace talks. However, officials say no concrete proposals are expected to come out of the talks.
