Making the most of a refuelling stop-over in Moscow en route to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Hanoi – US President, George W Bush met his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin . The discussions took place in the airport and lasted about 90 minutes. Officials say the two leaders discussed trade and the push for international sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme. Russia has opposed calls for tough sanctions.

Commentators say it was unusual for President Putin to travel to the airport, given the poor state of relations between Washington and Moscow. However, the Kremlin highlighted what it called the warm personal ties between the two men.
