The Arab league has met in Cairo and has produced the first indication Hamas may build bridges with Israel. The league also criticised the USA’s veto on a UN resolution this weekend condemning Israel’s military operations in Gaza. It called for an international peace conference, and secretary General Amr Moussa said the league would immediately end a financial blockade of the Hamas government:
“We are not going to be party to any blockade or siege or punishment of the Palestinian people, we cannot be, and we have not been. And we will work together in order to guarantee that all help needed will be afforded to the Palestinians”, he added.
The Palestinian’s foreign minister and Hamas member was allowed for the first time to attend. Previously he had been barred for Hamas’s rejection of the Palestinian Authorities’ peace initiative, but he has now accepted the idea of a conference.
