LA police again in the spotlight

Another storm has blown up for America’s police forces, this time in Los Angeles, with the release onto the internet of pictures of an arrest made in August. In the pictures officers repeatedly strike a suspect, who can be clearly heard protesting that he cannot breathe:

“There’s no denying that the video is disturbing. But as to whether the actions of the officer were appropriate in light of what they were experiencing and the totality of the circumstances, that’s what the investigation will hopefully determine”, said the LA police chief. His words cut little ice with the victim’s lawyer, who says excessive force was used, and that parts of the police file have been fabricated. The police claim he was a suspected gang member, but his family denies this, and he has no police record.
