US Democrats score victories in both chambers

Taking full control of Congress for the first time in 12 years – the Democrats have scored victory in both chambers in the crucial US mid-term elections. The wins would give them a 51-49 majority in the Senate, if the two independents vote with them as expected. Official results are still awaited for the state of Virginia, but the lead held by the Democratic challenger was big enough for the media to declare him the winner, a result which has been acknowledged off the record by most Republicans.

The Republicans were also swept from power in the House of Representatives – signalling a change of leadership at the head of the chamber.
