Democrats heading for House control

world news

| |

The Democrats look to have taken control of the House of Representatives in Congressional elections in the United States. Projections based on votes counted so far give the Democrats a clear lead. If confirmed the results will mean a difficult last two years in office for Republican President George W Bush.

The battle for the Senate – under Republican control going into the mid-terms – is very close. Turnout has been much higher than usual with voters citing recent corruption scandals, terrorism, the economy and Iraq in that order, as the main factors affecting how they’ve cast their ballot.

The Republicans have been hit by a series of scandals in the run up to this election while public support for the White House’s handling of Iraq is now down to around 30 per cent.
