The US is voting in midterm elections seen as a referendum on president George W Bush. It has been a campaign dominated by public worries about the country’s future, doubts over national leadership and discontent with the war in Iraq.

On the campaign trail, the Republican president has been questioning what rival Democrats would do differently. The Democrats insist they do have a clear strategy for the economy and Iraq, claiming Bush has mishandled both.
