Three more Palestinians killed in Gaza offensive

Observers say continuing violence in Gaza scuttles any hopes that peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians can resume. A further three Palestinians have died in battles with Israeli troops, one of them near the northern town of Beit Hanoun.

More than 30 people have been killed in a four-day offensive by the Israeli army, which says it is trying to stop the firing of rockets by militants. Three Israeli soldiers have died in the violence. Yesterday alone 17 Palestinians were killed, half of them civilians.

The Palestinian President has demanded UN intervention in the conflict. This after the killing of two unarmed women who were among about 50 mothers and daughters who acted as a human shield between troops and gunmen holed up in a mosque. The operation in Beit Hanoun is part of a wider Israeli offensive that began in June after the abduction of an Israeli soldier. The Palestinians say 300 people have been killed over the past four months.
