Unrest returns to Mexican tourist spot

world news

After three days of relative calm, the Mexican city of Oaxaca has once again been plunged into violence. Some 20 people were injured as thousands of protesters hurling molotov cocktails forced riot police to retreat. Authorities used tear gas to try to dispel the mob. A popular tourist spot, Oaxaca has been the scene of bloody unrest since June as demands for Governor Ulises Ruiz to quit grow.

He is accused of corruption but refuses to step down despite calls to do so from Mexican lawmakers. After three people were killed in riots last month, authorities sent in extra troops equipped with water cannons and helicopters. But the protesters, who have set up barricades of burning vehicles, appear determined to stand their ground.
