Two women killed in Gaza gunfire

Two women have reportedly been killed and half a dozen wounded in gunfire in Gaza where about 60 Palestinian militants were holed up inside a mosque. Some reports say about four dozen women were attempting to reach the men to act as human shields in the town of Beit Hanoun. The men are said to have escaped. Israeli troops and tanks surrounded the mosque as part of their largest operation in Gaza for several months.

The Israeli army maintains it was engaged in a gunfight with armed men, but it is looking into whether its troops had fired at the women. Elsewhere in Gaza, an Israeli air strike killed four suspected militants, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed over the past three days to at least 21. One Israeli soldier has been killed in the operation.

In the West Bank, it is reported that a Fatah militant has been killed in Nablus, and Israel has arrested a Palestinian minister.
