Italian hostage released unharmed in Afghanistan

An Italian photographer kidnapped in Afghanistan has been released unharmed. Gabriele Torsello was captured on October 12 as he was travelling between the volatile Helmand province in the south and neighbouring Kandahar. His kidnappers had threatened to kill him unless Italy’s 1,800 troops left Afghanistan and Rome handed over an Afghan Christian convert for trial in an Islamic court.

Himself a Muslim convert, Torsello had reportedly won the trust of the Taliban who let him photograph their strongholds in the country’s troubled south.
