Mexico’s outgoing president Vicente Fox has ordered federal forces into the city of Oaxaca after at least three people were shot dead in street riots including an American journalist. Unrest started five months ago as teachers went on strike demanding better pay and conditions.
The conflict has escalated with left-wing activists occupying much of the city, storming Congress and blocking streets, demanding the resignation of state governor Ulises Ruiz. Critics accuse him of corruption and using repressive tactics against dissidents.
At least nine people have been killed in the past five months. Until now, Fox had resisted pressure by authorities to send in troops, trying to reach a solution through negotiation. This week, striking teachers voted to return to classes but many protesters say they will not back down until Ruiz is ousted.
