Meeting with NATO’s Secretary-General in Washington, President Bush sent a strongly worded message to Iran condemning its latest nuclear activities. In an act of defiance against the UN, Tehran has reportedly upgraded its uranium-enriching capacity.
“We must double our effort to work with the international community to persuade the Iranians that there is only isolation from the world if they continue working forward on such a program,” President Bush said. “The idea of Iran having a nuclear weapon is unacceptable. It’s unacceptable for the United States, and unacceptable for the countries with which we are working in the UN to deliver a common message.”
The permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany have met to discuss a European draft on sanctions against Iran. The proposal bans Tehran from trading in nuclear materials and ballistic missiles. No agreement on the resolution is expected until next week at the earliest. After that it goes to the Security Council for consideration. Iran has threatened retaliation if sanctions are imposed.
