Probe shows Italy's Prime Minister spied on

A scandal is brewing in Italy with revelations the prime minister and his wife have been spied on for two years. An investigation led by prosecutors in Milan showed the tax records of Romano Prodi were checked “many many times.” The centre-left leader is said to be shocked and upset at the news, as was environment minister Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio: “This is very serious, its comes after a long line of spy scandals in our country. It must be understood that the head of government was subjected to a continued and irresponsible campaign.” It is not clear whether the spying continued after Prodi’s election, but it does appear to have taken place during his campaign for office and that is sparking speculation that the spying was ordered by Prodi’s centre-right rivals.
