Search on in Gaza for kidnapped Spanish photographer

Search operations are underway in the Palestinian territories to find a kidnapped Spanish photographer. Emilio Morenatti was snatched as he left his apartment in Gaza, witnesses say he was grabbed by four gunmen. There have been no immediate claims of responsibility.

Spain’s foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said everything was being done to free the photographer.

For veteran Palestinian politician Saeb Erekat
the kidnapping could only have negative consequences. “I urge all those involved, I urge all Palestinians in Gaza and elsewhere to stand up strongly against such abductions of foreign journalists and foreigners because this destroys the Palestinian image, the Palestinian cause, the Palestinian interests.”

The Hamas-led government has also called for Morenatti’s release.

The 37-year-old has been working for the Associated Press news agency in Jerusalem since 2005.

There has been a rise in the number of foreigners kidnapped in Gaza and the West Bank – so far the period of captivity has been relatively short and the hostages freed unharmed.
