Hamas and Fatah deal to try to end violence

world news

| |

Fatah and Hamas are reported to have agreed on measures to try to put a stop to violence between their two rival Palestinian movements. An Egyptian delegation is said to have brokered the deal at talks in Gaza. Hamas supporters have been staging protests in the West Bank, blaming Fatah and its leaders for the death of a Hamas activist on Wednesday. A power struggle between the two movements has led to gun battles over the past few weeks, leaving at least 19 people dead. Hamas says an office staffed by members of both factions will be set up, to try to resolve potentially explosive issues when they arise.
