Clashes in Israel on final Friday of Ramadan

The final Friday of Ramadan has been marred by violent clashes between Israeli police and worshippers seeking to attend prayers at the Al Asqa shrine in Jerusalem. Seven people were wounded in a series of incidents at checkpoints leading to the mosque.

During the rest of the year, Jerusalem is out of bounds to the majority of Palestinians on security grounds. But on Fridays during Ramadan, Israel allows access to men over 45 and women over 35 – it was when police attempted to bar access to younger Muslim men that the violence occurred.
