A majority of MPs in the Portuguese parliament have voted in favour of holding a referendum on abortion. Voters will be asked to decide whether they agree to decriminalising abortion in the first ten weeks of pregnancy, if it is carried out in a legal medical establishment and with the woman’s consent. Under current laws, women undergoing illegal abortions can be jailed for up to three years. According to recent polls, more than 47 percent of Portuguese people support decriminalising abortion. The referendum is expected to be held in January.
