U.S Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, has arrived in Tokyo on the first leg of her Asian trip to seek ways of implementing U.N. sanctions against North Korea. Welcomed by the Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Oso, Rice is also seeking to re-assure Japan and South Korea that they have no need to develop a nuclear deterrent of their own in response to the North’s weapons programme.

However her biggest challenge will be to get firm assurances from China that it will follow through diligently on the UN resolution. “This is an especially important time for our allies to work together. Our alliance is one of the most important pillars of peace and stability and it is stronger than ever and everyone should know that” she said.

Rice added that it the goal of the U.S. to see a de-escalation of the current crisis.
