The head of Britain’s armed forces has unleashed a political storm in the UK with remarks that his troops are making the security situation worse in Iraq. General Sir Richard Dannatt made the comment in an interview in today’s Daily Mail newspaper. e was quoted as saying Britain should “get … out sometime soon because our presence exacerbates the security problems”.
Dannatt also suggested that the government’s aim of creating a liberal democracy in Iraq was “naive” and would not be achieved. The British government has maintained its troops will stay in Iraq until local forces are able to cope on their own. Responding to the article, a Downing Street spokeswoman avoided direct criticism of the general saying only that British soldiers were in Iraq at the request of is government.
