There has been a surprising development in lengthy negotiations to form Ukraine’s next government. Viktor Yanukovich is expected to remain as prime minister but the party of the man who appointed him is moving into opposition. President Viktor Yushchenko’s Our Ukraine party has decided to pull its ministers out of the government after the latest round of talks, which have been under way for several months. Yushchenko made the pro-Russian Yanukovich leader after attempts failed to form a coalition of backers of the “Orange Revolution” two years ago. The President of Ukraine’s parliament says further negotiations are now likely to take place.
