Torrential rain and strong winds over the last two days have caused substantial damage to several areas of north west Spain. Although the worst of the rain is now over, one region, Galicia, was hard hit. A massive clean-up operation is now underway after streets were turned into rivers and cars swept away while homes and businesses were completely flooded. At its height, the rising water was estimated to have reached the two metre mark.
And France has not escaped. In the east hundreds of homes were also flooded and around a dozen departments were put on orange alert after heavy rain put entire villages under water. Thousands of people were forced from their homes while tens of thousands were left without electricity.
