Spain tones done ‘reconquest’ celebrations

world news

| |

A centuries-old tradition in Spain has yielded to modern times. Celebrations marking the Christian reconquest of the country from Moors have been toned down so as not to offend Muslims. Colourful pageants have been played out across the country but in one eastern village the custom of exploding the head of a dummy representing a Muslim has been abandoned. The mayor said the decision was taken to reflect today’s Spanish society and to avoid offending anyone. Spain is now home to a growing number of Muslims through a surge in immigration mainly from northern Africa.
