After years of highly publicised disputes with the Roman Catholic Church, controversial archbishop, Emmanuel Milingo, has been excommunicated. The final straw for the Vatican came on Sunday when Milingo ordained four married men as Bishops. The former archbishop of Lusaka in Zambia has openly declared himself on a mission to get the church to overturn its strict laws on the celibacy of the priesthood. He had already scandalised Rome by himself marrying in 2001, and in a Moonie ceremony. He left the Moonie Church a few months later and was reconciled with the Vatican. But last month he moved back in with his wife. In a statement, the Holy See said it had “patiently watched the evolution of events” that had lead to a “progressive break from communion with the church”.
