Benedict to meet Muslim leaders

Pope Benedict will meet Muslim ambassadors to the Vatican later today in an attempt to rebuild bridges with the Islamic world, following the outcry over his recent speech that quoted a medieval text that linked Islam to violence. Ambassadors from Iran, Turkey and Morocco are among those who have accepted the invitation. Benedict XVI provoked anger some two weeks ago when he cited a text that suggested that Islam, unlike Christianity, sought to spread “by the sword”.

He has since clarified the speech by saying his intention was to show that “religion and violence do not go together but religion and reason do.” But his choice of example was seen as insensitive – and the Pope’s expressions of regret at the hurt caused have not satisfied the likes of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, who have called on him to give a detailed explanation of his views on Islam.
