The Netherlands’ Justice and Housing ministers have resigned from the government after the publication of a report on the fire in Schipol which killed 11 illegal immigrants last October. The report concluded there were severe violations of fire security at the holding centre, and that the Justice minister, with responsibility for procedure in and the building of prisons, bore particular responsibility. Today the Dutch have some of the strictest immigration rules in Europe. The ministers’ resignation comes two months before the country is due to go to the polls in a General election, on November the 22nd.
