The state of California is taking on six major car manufactureres in a groundbreaking legal battle over climate change. It is claiming that greenhouse gases from their vehicles have caused enormous harm to its citizens’ health and the environment.
The state is seeking an unspecified amount in damages. Deputy Attorney General Ken Alex said:
“We expect to see greater impacts over time, that’s what the scientists tell us, and so we want to get the automakers to start to work out the problem and pay for whatever damages they may be a part of causing.”
The lawsuit comes less than a month after California adopted America’s first global warming law ordering a cut in greenhouse gas emissions. A car makers’ representative group said the companies would need time to study the complaint before making a response.
