Six killed in Swiss tunnel accident

At least six people have been killed in a collision between a bus and a car in a tunnel in Switzerland. The bus was carrying 23 ice hockey players. The accident took place as a car swerved to avoid a wheel lost by another vehicle. Fire filled the tunnel slowing rescue efforts.

The tunnel – the Viamala – is on one of two main motorways that cross the Swiss Alps near the town of Thusis not far from the border with Italy and Austria. 30” Switzerland’s last major tunnel accident was in 2001 when 11 people were killed in a head-on collision. Tunnel safety has been a major concern in the Alps since the Mont Blanc tunnel disaster in 1999 when a lorry burst into flames killing 39 people.
