The far right is continuing its advance in Germany. Exit polls in the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern show that Social Democrat state premier Harald Ringstorff has emerged the winner and is likely to share the region’s parliament with Germany’s far-right NPD party.

The NPD has gained seven per cent of the vote, more than the five per cent needed to take seats. If the polls are confirmed, the state of Mecklenburg-Voppommern will be the third of six regional parliaments in the former East Germany to have far-right representation.
