Improving relations between Ukraine and the EU tops the agenda today during a visit by Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich to Brussels today. The day also involves talks with NATO leaders. EU Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said entry to the World Trade Organisation should also be priority for Ukraine: “I’ve just said that indeed for the enhanced agreement it is important that Ukraine first undertakes the still-lacking steps towards WTO accession. But we have heard today that the Prime Minister and his government are already working very narrowly on this issue so I’m confident that it will be possible to have WTO accession by the end of the year and thus the way will be open,” she said.
Last night Ukraine was given the promise of talks early next year on broader ties with Brussels. But the pro-Moscow premier has told NATO leaders that Ukraine’s aspiration’s to join the alliance are on hold because of public opposition at home.
