The leaders of almost 40 Asian and European nations and representatives of the European Commission have gathered in Finland for the sixth ASEAM summit. The two-day meeting is taking place in Helsinki during Finland’s Presidency of the European Union. The first round table talks included issues like strengthening multi-lateralism, sustainable development, climate change, energy security, dialogue among cultures and globalisation.
The EU also pressed Asia to address concerns about workers rights abuses as it grows into an economic power house. But calls for action against climate change were given short shrift. Central Helsinki was snarled up on Saturday due to anti-summit protests. Around 130 people were arrested.
