At least 14 people have been detained in the Finnish capital after anti-globalisation protests. Scores of police with batons and dogs were deployed throughout Helsinki as European and Asian leaders held summits. Authorities say they also prevented a demonstration against the biennial Asia-Europe Meeting which up to 40 heads of state are attending.
Yesterday China’s Prime Minister met with his Finnish counterpart, Matti Vanhanen to discuss the nuclear standoff with Iran. Wen Jiabao urged the international community not to threaten Iran with economic and other sanctions to resolve the crisis. The EU and China, meanwhile, expressed their grave concern over North Korea’s recent multiple launch of missiles.
