The British Prime Minister has met the Palestinian President to discuss the stalled roadmap for peace in the Middle East. Mahmoud Abbas says he is ready to meet the Israeli Prime Minister without prior conditions as soon as possible. Speaking at a press conference, Tony Blair said the international community should deal with a future Palestinian unity government. He said: “Such a government, based on the Quartet requirements, does offer the possibility of reengagement by the international community.
“And I would like to say that, so far as I’m concerned, that if such a unity government is formed, then I believe that it is right that the international community deal with such a government.” Tony Blair also met relatives of Israeli soldiers held by Gaza militants and Hizbollah. The families asked Blair to assist in the release of their loved ones. Today’s meeting follows assurances yesterday from Ehud Olmert that he too is ready to meet with Abbas to discuss implementing the road map.
