Suicide attack near US embassy in Afghanistan

world news

| |

A suicide car bomber has struck near the US embassy in Kabul. Reports from the scene said between 10 and 16 people had died, including two US soldiers. The blast happened only about 100 metres from the heavily fortified embassy compound. Four Italian soldiers have also been wounded in a bomb attack in Farah, and a man died trying to set off a bomb in Kandahar.

The latest deaths come as NATO’s operations commander, General James Jones, said the alliance had underestimated the level of violence in southern Afghanistan. He called on member countries meeting in Warsaw this weekend to provide more troops and equipment. More than 2,000 people have been killed this year in a resurgence in attacks by Taliban fighters.
