Fighting for their citizenship, thousands of illegal immigrants and their supporters have protested in Washington for a legislation overhaul. It is a demand that the US Congress says is impossible and Republicans are divided on the issue, leaving many people disappointed with the Bush administration.
One Hispanic woman said: “We are fighting for the Spanish people. We are fighting for the American dream.” It is a dream that is unlikely to come true for the moment as Congress instead makes border security a priority before it adjourns for elections in November.
Another protester said: “In reality, none of us have our papers. We need them to listen to us. We don’t need promises, we need results.” Another protest is planned for Saturday in California. A greater turnout of immigrants is expected when again they will make their voices heard. Supporters of the proposed legislation say sooner or later Congress will have to listen to the some 12 million living in the country.
