The Prince of Asturias Awards are dubbed the Nobel Prizes of the Spanish-speaking world. Today the winner in the sports category was announced by former International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch in northern Spain. The jury’s choice was the Spanish basketball team -newly-crowned world champions after beating Greece 70-47 in last Sunday’s final. Spain won although its star Pau Gasol was on the sidelines with a foot injury. Named player of the tournament, he was there however to share in the celebrations. After returning from Japan where they had triumphed in all nine of their matches, the Spanish team was welcomed as heroes in Madrid, with thousands of supporters pouring onto the streets. The victorious squad has also been received by the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Spain’s King Juan Carlos.
