Israeli President Moshe Katzav has confirmed that negotiations are progressing over the release of the three kidnapped soldiers whose capture sparked the recent conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. “The release of the kidnapped soldiers is a top priority for Israel,” he said. “There are contacts, there are sources involved he said and we hope very much the soldiers will return safe and sound.” Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was captured in Gaza, is likely to be exchanged with Palestinian prisoners, with Egypt acting as an intermediary. For the two soldiers held in Lebanon, Israel is likely to hold talks with the Lebanese government to avoid dealing directly with Hizbollah.
