The European Space Agency’s Smart-1satellite has come to an explosive end to by intentionally smashing into the moon’s surface. The probe crashed into an area known as the Lake of Excellence a short time ago. There was huge relief at mission control in Germany that the expedition had been a success right up to the end. It was the final act of a three year journey which yielded important information about the chemical make-up of the moon and its origins. Scientists were also testing other space technology during this mission, in preparation for future voyages.
