The UN Secretary General has met the Iranian President but there has been no breakthrough in the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear programme. Kofi Annan was in Iran to try to persuade its leadership to abide by a UN demand to halt the process of uranium enrichment. He said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reitered that Iran wanted talks on the issue first:
“They do not accept suspension before negotiations, but they are prepared to negotiate and of course I know that there is going to be a meeting between Mr Larinjani and Mr Solana in the next few days and I hope at that point they will find a way to move forward.”
The EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, will travel to Tehran this week on the same mission. Iran denies Western claims that it is trying to develop nuclear weapons, saying its aim is to produce atomic energy.
