The first Italian troops have landed on Lebanese soil. Reconnaissance craft checked the coast to ensure the first contingent would reach Lebanon safe and sound. They arrived in Tyre early Saturday. 800 troops left Italy on Tuesday and will be located at a base 20 kilometres inland.
120 more troops will join them within ten days. Italy is taking a leading role in the U.N. force in Lebanon, sending almost 3,000 troops in all, the largest contingent. Italy takes over command of the Lebanon force from France in early 2007.
