Explosive finish for European lunar mission

The countdown is on to a spectacular and violent end to the European Space Agency’s lunar mission. The Smart 1 probe is due to smash into the moon’s surface in the coming hours – the culmination a 16-month odyssey that has provided valuable information.

“For the first time we’ve measured the chemical composition of the moon without landing,” said one mission leader. “We’ve detected calcium, we’ve compared these with earlier measurements and we are confident we can make a map of the chemical elements of the moon and understand its affiliation with the Earth.” EuroNews will carry live television coverage of the impact which is expected around 7:30 am Central European Time on Sunday.
