The US actor Glenn Ford has died in his Californian home at the age of 90. He was a firm favourite with post-war film-goers and made his mark in movies such as “Gilda” and “The Big Heat”. He could turn his hand to both romance and comedy and was a notable cowboy, normally portraying his roles with an introspective and calm style. He never enjoyed the mega-stardom of contemporaries such as James Stewart and Henry Fonda, but, like them, his “strong but quiet” characters gave him an enduring popularity.
