At least 48 people have been killed and a similar number injured in Rajasthan, India. The small town of Karma’s annual festival was abandoned as rescue services struggled to find any survivors under concrete from a water tank that collapsed on them. “This mishap took place during the annual wrestling festival. During the final round of the match some excited youths went up to a water tank, and the roof collapsed”, said a local magistrate. In all it is thought some 200 people were on the tank when it failed, and the collapse sent crowds of thousands, in town for the festival, into panic. Police say that local officials had attempted to prevent people from climbing onto it. The government of Rajasthan has opened an inquiry into the accident.
