Britain’s opposition Conservative Party is calling for travel restrictions to be imposed on Bulgaria and Romania should they join the European Union. The conservatives fear working conditions in Britain might be undermined after research suggested more than 30,000 Romanians might enter the country should visa controls not be maintained.

The Romanian government puts the figure at 10,000. The average wage in Britain is six times higher than in Romania. The British government was one of just three EU countries to allow unrestricted access to workers since expansion in 2004, and has so far accepted more than 400,000.
