Pressure from the street for Israel's Olmert to quit

A growing number of people are taking to the streets of Jerusalem demanding their prime minister resign. Ehud Olmert’s popularity has plummeted following the conflict against Hizbollah. “The situation in the country is desperate and we would like to change all our leadership,” said one woman. “We feel that they all failed. All of them have to go home – from the prime minister to the chiefs of the army – everyone has to go home.”

Olmert’s government has been further weakened by a series of scandals involving senior members including himself, his army chief and his justice minister. The prime minister has promised a 1.5 billion euro package to help rebuild towns in northern Israel hardest hit by Hizbollah’s rockets.
