A March for Basque self rule


An estimated 15,000 people joined this demonstration in Bilbao, some brandishing Lebanese and Palestinian flags, calling for the Spanish region to hold a referendum on independence from Madrid. The event nearly didn’t happen – Spanish conservatives and groups defending the rights of victims of the violent Basque separatists group ETA tried to have it stopped. But judges said they couldn’t prove it was organised by Batasuna, the outlawed party considered ETA’s political wing, despite some its leaders being there. ETA declared a ceasefire in March, and the Socialist government has announced talks.
