Dutch police are to question 12 passengers taken off a US Northwest Airlines plane bound for India. Flight 42 was escorted back to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport after the crew reported that several passengers were behaving suspiciously. Media reports claim that a group of US air marshals on board the flight were the first to raise the alarm. Reports suggest that those arrested were not following airline security rules while on board, particularly those concerning the use of mobile phones.
The authorities say there is no reason to upgrade the level of security alert in the Netherlands. Dutch police can hold suspects for up to six days if necessary. More information about the arrests is due later today.
