Spain calls for help in dealing with immigrants

The Spanish Government is stepping up efforts to obtain more help in dealing with its current immigration crisis. Spanish ministers are holding talks with Senegal and Mauritania on Monday to discuss how to curb the influx of refugees from these countries. The Spanish deputy leader will also be in Finland to demand more EU assistance. 1,200 more immigrants arrived on the islands this weekend, adding to this year’s figure of more than 17,000.

In August alone, 23 have died trying. Italy faces the same problem. Coastguards have been searching for survivors after a rubber boat taking refugees to Lampedusa capsized. At least 10 died and a further 20 are still unaccounted for.
10 were lucky enough to be rescued by a passing fishing boat.
